The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) was invited to the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7), which was held in Yokohama from 28 to 30 August 2019. During the Conference, the OIE organised a side event in order to strengthen cooperation between Japan and the OIE towards solving problems relating to zoonotic diseases in Africa. The event began with the opening remarks by Dr Toshiko Abe, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Mr Kohjiro Takano, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries followed by introduction of the programme by Mr Hiroshi Kato, Vice-President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and Dr Jean-Philippe Dop, Deputy Director General of the OIE. On this occasion, the OIE and JICA agreed to cooperate to fight against zoonoic diseases in Africa and signed a Letter of Intent for OIE/JICA partnership.
On 20 December 2019, Dr Monique Eloit, Director General of the OIE, and Mr Koji Abe, Charge d’Affaires ad interim of Japan to France, signed in Paris, France, the Agreement between the OIE and the Government of Japan regarding the Privileges and Immunities of the OIE Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific, which is based in Tokyo. This agreement will facilitate the activities of the Representation.
